We walked without talking much for the rest of the day. When it was time to find something for dinner and set up camp, I wanted to display the hunting techniques I'd picked up.

"I do not see any suitable tracks. Keep moving." Henna was keenly on the look out for any sign of nearby fauna we could make meat out of. She assured us that there were no nasty trap-plants or similar hazards on the ground in this area. If there were, she'd never encountered or even heard of them. With that in mind, I was more courageous with my exploring as I broke off from our party of three.

Behind a thick tree trunk I spied a big, fat rabbit-like animal cleaning itself next to a puddle of muddy water. It did kind of remind me of the pet bunny I'd had as a young boy but right now, this thing just looked like a bag of steaks to me. It was maybe two feet long and it had no idea I was even there. Perfect.

I slowly raised my spear and got ready to make the shot. I'd been practicing by throwing it at makeshift targets when we'd made camp over the past few days. I knew I could make the shot. If not, then there was no harm done.

"No!" shouted Henna from ten paces away as the spear shaft left my hand, sailing through the crisp late afternoon air. And it hit!

"Yes!" I shouted, too excited to worry about why Henna had shouted to caution me. I didn't care if the animal wasn't suitable for consumption. This was about making my first proper kill as a hunter—a real man.

There was a huge boom and a gush of red foam filled the air. If you could imagine someone sticking a grenade inside a bag of blood and letting that sucker go off, well I guess this might have looked like that. I stood there covered in gore, chunks of hairy rabbit flesh clinging to my skin, drenched from the waist up in blood.

"I did try to stop you," said Henna as she slowly approached. "Oh my, Erik, you look funny." I don't blame her for laughing as she did. Anyone would have done the same. "Congratulations on your first kill though, honorable hunter." I think she might have meant that sincerely but couldn't keep a straight face to say it. That sounded like something her people would have traditionally said when someone made their first kill.

"Is your wife on the rag or something, Erik?" called out Xyth as she ran over to find me standing there looking like a B-movie murder victim.

Henna looked baffled about that insult but still kept laughing anyway. I joined in too eventually, once I'd gotten over the shock of what happened. "Well, I guess I know why we shouldn't hunt those rabbit things," I said.

"They are not dangerous. That is a deterrent to creatures who don’t know better. Large predators, the smarter ones who are able to chase down such a fast and nimble creature, they know better.
